Cannot retrieve mail

When I try to retrieve mail a window comes up that says
Login via SASL (login) failed. The server may not support login or the password may be wrong. The server said the command does not compute.
I have gone through K MAIL "settings" and checked password and user name and gone through the conection setup to make sure I had not misspelled the password.
The connection does everything else as it should. I am running "Mandrake 10" on a dial up connection and am not very computer savy.

What email server are you trying to connect ? Hotmail, Yahoo ...... ?

If you navigate to the Extra Settings tab [KMail Settings -> Accounts -> (Select account) Modify -> Extras], you will see a button "Check What The Server Supports". Just click on it and it should get you the authentication method used. Simply click OK and you are done.

Delighted to finaly get my mandrake up and running. I doubt that I will ever become expert enough to help anyone but I suppose the is always someone with less knowledge. Like the song goes - - - -
A HUNDRED AND FORTY ONE COULD DRAW FASTER THAN HE BUT IRVING WAS SEARCHING FOR ONE FORTY THREE.

More about the quote

Dont know the name of the song or the singer but it was about "Irving" the hundred and forty second fastest gun in the west.
Probably came out early seventies at a guess.
