Mozilla mail can't retrieve mail etc

I just recently installed Slackware on my computer. I'm having difficulties trying to get Mozilla mail to work (in Gnome). The problem is that the "Get Msgs" button is grayed out or disabled. So I can't check my pop server for email. Another problem is that when I try to compose a message, I can fill in the "To:" and "Subject:" fields, but I can't enter anything in the main body of the message. Yet another problem is if I create another account, then the "remove account" button does nothing.
