Question Caching Proxy Server

Hello all,

I work in a school as a network administrator and have built a redhat 8 based Squid server to provide caching and user tracking for the schools users. The tracking is done via SMB_AUTH with requires the users to "log-in" to use the internet, and their username and password is validated against the NT4 PDC.

Our network is provided by a company called Research Machines (www.rm.com). They are now trying to push their own version of what I have implemented but their product is able to pre-cache webpages in advance of them being required. Their product is called RM Smartcache 2 , details of which can be found at:

Can anybody suggest a programme that I could add to my current set up so that I can achieve the same, without having to spend £1400.

any suggestions to help me solve this problem would be greatfully recieved.

Doing this would significantly increase your bandwidth but if you are looking for a solution you could try logging the pages that are accessed (you may already do this) then run a seperate process on the server to fetch all pages that are linked from that document. I think there is a switch in wget that will do this (I think it is "-m")

Check out

Dnsmasq

Dnsmasq is a caching DNS forwarder designed to provide DNS service on a small network. It is targeted at home networks using NAT and connected to the internet via a modem, cable-modem or ADSL connection but would be a good choice for any small network where low resource use and ease of configuration are important.
Dnsmasq is included in at least the following Linux distributions: Gentoo, Debian, Smoothwall, IP-Cop, floppyfw, Firebox, Freesco and Clarkconnect. It is also available as a FreeBSD port and is used in Linksys wireless routers.
