Any real modem will work.
The problem is that some modems are "winmodems" - the functionality is actually provided by software that runs on your computer's CPU. Some winmodems have had software implemented for Linux, but they still steal CPU resources from your computer, and may not work reliably if you are running mutiple CPU intensive processes.
Make sure that the modem you purchase is not a winmodem, and you will be fine.
