Active Directory

Could openldap(running on a GNU/Linux Server) be used in a Windows Enviroment instead of Microsft's Active Directory? just a thought...

openldap is *only* ldap, a directory service. whilst if you're used to AD you're used to a (broekn version of) LDAP and many other things besides like all that domain crap... you can generally replicate most parts of Active Directory but not in a single pacakge, e.g that Domain stuff would be done with Samba as a PDC.

Have you checked out Likewise 2? You can join your Linux box to AD and setup single sign-on and configure and manage file and print services, etc. from graphical Windows tools, some of the tools the software has allows you to configure LDAP strictly through Windows although you still have that pesky AD problem lingering

I have a how-to on my website http://www.opensourcehowto.org for setting up samba as a primary domain controller (PDC)

OpenLDAP LAM Samba as PDC
http://www.opensourcehowto.org/how-t...ba-as-pdc.html

and if you feeling a little bit more adventurous later on you could try getting into the policies with samba

Samba Primary Domain Controller with Group Policies
