in command line : $ ftp ip_address_of_ftp_server
Of course you must know the FTP commands to go on. In GUI, you may use a web browser (and specify the address as usual : ftp://ip_address) or a graphic ftp client like gFtp in Gnome.

to serve Linux files or directories to Windows clients, you must set a Samba server up (it is necessary to have some understanding of how Windows networking works - as far as it does )
