3c501 device eth0 does not seem to be present

Error message:
Bringing up interface eth0
3c501 device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization
FAILED

From redhat
run lspci -v

I get 00:08.0 Ethernet Controller: Galileo Technology Ltd.: Unknow device 4320 (revf 12)
Subsystem: SMC, Standard Microsystems Corp: unknown device b452

in etc/modules.conf
I see alias eth0 3c501

redhat-config-network
3c501 device eth0 does not seem to be present

kernel is 2.4.20-6

I tried copying the sk98lin24.tar.gz file into the top level of my directory and following the instructions but it still didn't work.

I hate to say it but I am not sure how to reconfigure the kernel and so on.

I'll be reading up my documentation again in the meantime.

are you sure that its a 3com card? if lspci is showing a SMC card then its highly unlikely that its a 3com,

what does dmesg show?

NET4 or divert:

I can't find any reference to eth0 besides these two:

NET4: Frame Diverter 0.46

later

NET4: Linux TCP/IP 1.0 for NET4.0

later

NET4: Unix domain sockets 1/0SMP for Linux NET4.0.

later

divert: not allocating divert_blk for non-ethernet device eth0

kernel mismatch

I tried getting the latest driver but I got a kernel mismatch
insmod smc94x2.0
(that was the driver)
And I got the message that the smc94x2.0 was compiled for kernel version 2.4.2-2 and my kernel is version 2.4.20-6
I have written SMC about their card and their old driver.

The card is SMC9452TX

Seems to be the problem. Thanks for your help.

tried, same one, doesn't work

Hi,
Thanks for helping. It is the same version as I got from SMC. This is what "tech support" at SMC wrote:

For your information, as mentioned in the release notes, this adapter only
support Kernel versino 2.4.2-2.

So, that is my experience with tech support.

I suppose I could buy a new ethernet card or NIC, I just want it to connect.
