Regarding HDMI sound and Linux Mint 19

I have an ‘HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j057cl’ with ‘hda intel pch’ audio currently running ‘Linux Mint 19’ Mate desktop that I have been trying to get the HDMI sound to work on for some time now. On this same computer, HDMI sound worked just fine with no modifications when I was running mint 18.2. I also tried installing ‘ubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64’ and once again HDMI sound just worked. I've tried everything that I have been able to find including the ‘alsamixer’ and ‘pulseaudio’ suggestions that seem to show up time and again in my searches. I've also tried several different kernels. So far, HDMI sound isn’t even an available option. Does anyone know what’s wrong with mint 19. Has anyone been able to figure this out yet. Any fresh suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried:

Code:
pactl set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo

Excellent. In that case, I should probably mention that you can set it back to ordinary analogue output with:

Code:
pactl set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stereo
If you install the pavucontrol package (PulseAudio Volume Control) then I personally have had success with changing the output from HDMI and back again with that GUI (Configuration->Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output or Analogue Stereo Output). But only after I had used the pactl command the very first time. Go figure. It appears you may have tried this though.

By the way, you can mark this thread "Solved" if you want (see "Thread Tools" at the top of the thread).

Thanks again hydrurga

I've had pavucontrol installed for some time but like you the HDMI option did not show up until after I sent it your magic words
Will mark as solved
For me anyway
Thanks again
