HDMI - do all video cards support sound through the HDMI port?

I hope the subject line clearly states the question. Today I connected one of my Dell Inspiron 3050 tiny PCs via HDMI cable to the big screen TV. I played a movie with vlc and the video displayed fine on the TV. However, I had no sound. The TV mfgr. tech support told me that the sound should be coming through the HDMI cable (although the manual shows a second audio cable in the setup - that did not work either).

Dell tech support did not understand the question

Is there a way I can determine from within Linux (Mint Mate 17.3) if the Intel Integrated Graphics "card" is sending audio out the HDMI port as well as out the headphone port?

TIA,

Ken

Go to Pulse Audio panel and make sue HDMI sound is turned on and/or the volume isn't all the way down.

Well slap my butt I had not the slightest thought to look there. I have NEVER used any sort of audio output other than the headphone/speaker jack - and that is going back to my 386 - which I think I had to add a sound card to! I did find a setting to send sound to both the analog headphone jack and HDMI. I have changed that. Now I just have to pry the wife loose from the TV (or vice versa) and give it a try.

Thanks whm1974 !!!

I will update once I have had a chance to test the change.

Hooray! I had to try a few of the many options in the audio settings but eventually I had SOUND! Tonight we watch the Maltese Falcon (1931) - 10 years before the Bogart version. Una Merkel is cute as a button. I love pre-code movies.

My many many thanks whm1974. This one is solved.
