X server error after installation of RH9

Hello,

I have been trying to install Red Hat 9 on my Compaq Presario2100. The installation seemed to go fine, but now I"m gettin gand error that the X server cannot start.

I've read that there were problems with the pcmcia and acpi so when I started installation I passed the kernel the argument
acpi=on allowccdma pcmcia.

upon re-boot I entered inteactive set up and turned pcmcia off.

By reading through various postings I can see that I most probably have to do something with my XF86config file. But, being a newbie I don't know where this file is, how to edit it and then what to do with it.

Can some one please offer some advice.

Thank you

First thing I notice?
acpi=on
That's real nice and all but redhat doesnt have any acpi support at all.
This is basically the source of all your problems as, one. Its a discontinued distro. And 2, it has shitty laptop support.

Go with a real distro like Suse or Mandrake and you'll be fine.

While I would have to agree with Caeda's point about Redhat being discontinued (which makes it somewhat less than relevant on the desktop). That, and I am a SuSE bigot as well.

However, it doesn't mean that Fedora won't work.

This guy posted his XF86Config file:

Since Fedora probably wants to come up in X and can't, hit <Control><Alt><F2> to bring up another shell so that you can work on it.

Check out that guys site, email him as necessary (since he seems to have things working), but keep us informed.

Thanks John,

I got fedora installed with minimal problems encountered. The X server is working too.

I had come across that XF86config file before (lisonbee), but as I said even if I had the correct one I'm not too sure what to do with that file.

For future reference could you tell me how to use that file to configure the X server properly?

Thanks

Good, glad to hear it. Never have tried Fedora, no idea as to what it's like.

This is where you would do the <Control><Alt><F2> and log in as root (since you are there to do maintenance, otherwise login as a user) and copy the new XF86Config to /etc/X11. Being sure to rename the old version first just in case.

And when you do maintenance work in a shell, there is a great program called "mc" (Midnight Commander). Very nice, especially if you aren't familar with the commands.
