FC1/RH9 installation error - disk read
I have tried repeatedly to install both fc1 and rh9 on an Athlon XP1800+ that has been running Suse 8.1 for quite some time. The IDE drive is an IBM Deskstar which I ask the install program to reformat using default partitions.
In both cases, the installation crashes randomly, with a message that the CD is bad, no disk space, or there is a format problem, while trying to copy application files. I have taken the drive out and installed both os's (at different times) on another machine, but since this machine is remote, I don't want to have to depend on it if I have to re-install.
I thought the CD drive may be the problem, but I used 5 different drives - one brand new - with the same result. I tried a network installation with the same result.
I tried ide=nodma and acpi=off with the same result. I conclude from all this:
It can't be the CD drive
It can't be the media
It may be the IDE controller - but then, why does Suse work?
Any help appreciated
