Question Suse 9.0 orinoco wireless card issue

wireless card: orinoco silver
kernel: 2.4.22
distro: SuSE 9.0

Card is ok. Works on RedHat 9.0 and Fedora on same laptop.

Problem: wireless card detected by SuSE 9.0 but still can't surf the internet or LAN.

from console I do:

STEPS
1. I plug the card in...

#cardctl ident

Socket 0:
product info: "Lucent Technologies", "WaveLAN/IEEE", "Version 01.01", ""
manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002
function: 6 (network)

2. log from /var/log/messages
Dec 26 12:16:35 oh122 cardmgr[8227]: executing: './network start eth1'
Dec 26 12:16:35 oh122 ifup: No configuration found for eth-pcmcia-0 eth1
Dec 26 12:16:36 oh122 /etc/hotplug/net.agent[20664]: Interface eth1 is handled by service PCMCIA ... exiting

3.
Then I try to do the configuration via YAST2.
YAST says:
Network cards to configure (available)
LUCENT WaveLAN/IEEE

I click on the configure button and set it up as a wireless.
and it says "network device: wlan-pcmcia" and add all the settings for my network but there's no signal at all therefore I can't surf the internet or LAN.

I checked the noise level and link quality. There are no stats about it.
Wireless cards lights are off --not blinking.

4.
I unplug/plug back on the wireless card, this is an output form /var/log/messages

Code:
Dec 26 12:20:47 oh122 kernel: orinoco_lock() called with hw_unavailable (dev=dd344800)

5.Went back to Yast. Configured the card as a regular NETWORK Ethernet card. Lights blink, I get strength signals and noise level stats but I can't connect to the internet or surf the LAN. Obviously because I didn't input the wireless Lan settings such as the ESSID.

So...wrapping up...the system thinks it's a network-ethernet card. Yast is right by saying it's a wireless card and I configure the card as such but still no joy. Then I configure the card via Yast as a network-ethernet card and I get signal but obviously I can't surf the net because the wireless settings were not set. I'm unable to do it. Yast won't let me do that.

How do I tell SuSE 9.0 that it's a wireless card not a network ethernet card. See Step 1. ?
I checked this link but it's useless:
hxxp://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/11/wavelan.html

How do I make this work? let me know if you need more info.

Cool solved!!

1. configure orinoco card under Yast.
2. set it up as a regular ethernet card. Since there's one ethernet card already built-in on my laptop, I used ethernet 1.
[it won't work if you set it up as a regular wireless card]
3. cd /etc/sysconfig/network
4. edit ifcfg-eth1 file (the wireless card configuration you just set up.).
5. delete all contents of that file.

Add the following contents to the empty file --note you need to change entry WIRELESS_ESSID='usdpublic' to own network:

BOOTPROTO='dhcp'
DHCLIENT_SET_DOWN_LINK='yes'
MTU=''
REMOTE_IPADDR=''
STARTMODE='hotplug'
UNIQUE='K1pk.jrBDbmL7DWA'
WIRELESS_ESSID='usdpublic'
WIRELESS_KEY=''
WIRELESS_MODE='Managed'
WIRELESS_NICK=''
WIRELESS_NWID=''
DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF='yes'
DHCLIENT_SET_DEFAULT_ROUTE='yes'

6. Restart wireless card.
ifdown eth1 && ifup eth1

also, if above alone doesn't work you can do step 7. If you start up the firewall in SuSE 9.0, the load order will be reset. You will need to re-configure using the steps below [from somewhere in the wireless subforum].

7. Just log in as root, or open the File Manager - Super User, and browse to /etc/rc.d. Two folders will need to be addressed--"rc3.d" and "rc5.d". There you will find services starting with "k" and "s". The "k" items are for shutdown and you can ignore them. Go to the "s" items and simply assign a number to the network service that is higher than the pcmcia (and in my case I did the hotplugging also, but I'm not sure that it is necessary). What I mean to say is simply rename the network file so that the number is higher than the others. That way the netword card will be detected prior to the network and therefore be configured.

enjoy.
