Debian, Orinoco Wireless card - help

Hi,

I have just gone to Debian from Redhat and need some help ref Wireless Networking. Am I correct that I can set everything up under the interfaces file, or do I have to alter wireless.opts.

I am using the orinoco bases card with orinoco_cs driver, with the patch.

Scott

Post linux-wlan-ng-doc?

Scott,

I'd recommend installing the wireless drivers' documentation:

# apt-get install linux-wlan-ng-doc

There's a README.Debian with good clues (no clear explanations - this is Linux, remember) about using these drivers vs. the ones supplied with the PCMCIA modules, and how to configure the card either way. After apt installs 'em the docs end up in:

/usr/share/doc/linux-wlan-ng-doc

The README.Debian is unhelpfully gzipped, so has to be unpacked before you can finally read it. (It's like a fscking Harry Potter novel just to RTFM, sometimes )

HTH,
Ab.

Do the lights on the card light up when you plug it in? If not, then you need to install pcmcia stuff. If they do light up, see if you have "iwconfig" which you can use to configure things like the ESSID and WEP keys. If not, apt get wlan-tools (? I forget the exact name). I'm using a cisco 340 and it was pretty easy to get working in Debian. I don't think I had to edit my wireless.opts at all.
