resolution, KDE, RedHat 9

I have just installed Redhat 9.0 on my Toshiba 6100 laptop and am having a bit of trouble and hope someone can help. Here is the thing, I had RH 8.0 installed and then the hard drive died (these things are known for this, and I would never buy one. This is a company computer so I am stuck with it) so I know that I can get things configed right, but right now I can not get it working.

Here are a couple of things. I have installed the NVIDIA drivers and I have tried to configu through the "displays" control panel in Gnome, and I have also tried to reset it in XFree86config and nothing changes.. what do I want to change you ask? everything is WAY big. I can not get the resolution to change to a reasonable size.

Also trying to startx with

startkde

or

startx kde

fails. I have no frigging idea why that is.

So my issue is I gigantic everything on my monitor and I can not get my Xwindows system of choice to run. (I know I know Gnome is friendly with Redhat, but I am a SuSE on PowerPC guy to start with and am used to KDE and prefer it.

Anyone who can help with this dilemma? I would be much obliged.

David
