laptop connected to external monitor resolution problem

hi everyone!.. I have mint 15 (olivia) on my laptop, and I sometimes work using my lcd monitor, which I configured through monitor in "control center". There I select the second monitor, but the whole desktop does not show up in the monitor, only wallpaper shows up... while all the application are showing stil in the laptop. So I select "show same image in all monitors" from monitors at "control center" and then I get the full desktop in my lcd monitor; however, this is a 22 inch monitor with resolution in the 1600x1200, but the resolution in on laptop only goes upto 10xx or simillar... very low. Anyway, how could I make the resolution to go higher, so I can display the desktop resolution correctly on my monitor?

Thanks
-J

In days of old you had to restart X to get the best results with multiple monitors. You can't really cntl+alt+backspace to restart X these days, but you could probably make your change and reboot. It may also be the cable used to connect to the monitor. Things like VGA connections don't play well with higher resolution devices. And on less popular / new devices the EDID might be reporting poorly on the devices capabilities.
