Low resolution on external laptop monitor

I'm am running Suse 10.1 (with ATI Radeon driver with Acer AL1914 monitor). No matter what resolution setting I configure using YAST the external monitor displays the same resolution as the laptop's top internal LCD screen - 1024x768.

Would appreciate being walked-thru the sets needed (I assume editing xorg.cong) to allow the external to reach higher resolution levels.

do you have the monitor specs? did you just purchase it? when i first purchased a widescreen 19 in monitor (i didn't know what i was getting into) the max res ended up being 1440x900, my laptop can go alot higher than that.

I have the same problem. The external monitor can definately go higher.
Also, how do I send the video output to just the external monitor - like if I'm doing a presentation ? The Fn+LCD keyboard button does not work under linux (redhat fedora )
