Question installed Mandrake 10.1 but cant' access control center?

I have installed Mandrake 10.1 on to an older gateway laptop Solo 9150, and so fart everything seems to work with the exception that I can't load the mandrake control center at all. When I attempt to load the control center it asks me for the root password, which I do but then it just dies. Any ideas of where I should start to look for answers?

during the install the only error message that I recieved was a "glibc-2.3.3-21mdk.i586" error, which I recieved several times, I had selected to continue with the install.
