how to add
nolapic
to the boot params
I have the same issue on my DELL inspiron 4150. also on mine it goes one step further where, if i do not unplug or change from battery to plugged in , and i do a normal shutdown , the machine never fully turns off. i heart the hard drives turning off, but the fan and the lcd screen are still on, i have to switch it off from the power button!!!
i read the temporary workarounds for this problem, my issue is this:
sadly at the moment my primary OS is win XP. i dual boot between this and madrake. i'm afraid if i change those settings in the bios it could affect the normal working of XP, and we all know how just using XP can drastically affect it so i am not sure how this would.
how do i add this parameter to the boot options?
add
nolapic
to the boot params
thanks.

Are you talking about during install or after install.
It depends on what boot loader are you using.
Boot to linux
lilo edit /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo
grub edit /etc/grub.conf
add the values to the end of the kernel line.

It looks like you already have it there. It is the append line.
cat /proc/cmdline
Just to double check that is actually made it to the boot process.
Back to you origianal problem.
How are you shutting down?
Just for kicks what happens when you login as root and run
shutdown -h now;

What distro are you using?
Check this link out

You are using lilo not grub so you will need to edit
/etc/lilo.conf and then run lilo as root.
