headphone works but the speakers no


Hi, I have a problem with the speakers of my laptop Dell inspiron 600m. The headphones works well but the speakers doesn't work.
I did different things for to configure appropriate my sound card with the tools of alsa, but the speakers doesn't work.
Somebody knowns a method step by step for to check or find how to solve the problem?
I have Debian Linux Version 2.6.23.1ar-custom

This is information for my audio device
# lspci | grep audio
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

Did you try in a console "alsamixer".Maybe you have to unmute the channel or turn up the level.Worth a try.

Hi,

depending on the hardware implementation i found on various Dell devices that you have to enable "external amplifier", for example on Latitude D6xx series.
