I've recently bought a mac book pro 15" as a work computer because ill be making sure the game we are developing runs flawlessly on Linux and Mac.
so, i have triple booted the system, with OS X 10.4.9 , windozeXP pro, and Ubuntu 6.10
i've struggled, but finally got my X1600 to be recognized properly by glxinfos
glxgears was laggy before i did the install, but now, it runs super smooth. I was curious, i started glxgears with the -printfps option, i saw an average of 240fps, which for me, is more than enough, since after 60fps, there not much difference anyway.
As i was reading on the Net, i saw people with radeon 9200 card hitting 4000fps and more
This brings 2 questions :
1 - Is my video card really properly installed ?
2 - Does my video card has some sort of built-in mechanism that prevents it from going uselessly further than 240fps to minimize the heat, because that laptop is getting really hot easily.
As much for my curiosity as yours, try "glxgears -info"
Depending on the distribution you are using, I think glxgears is fudged. Lots of gurus get very upset at the proclivity to use glxgears as a benchmark, and I'm sure there must be some good reason for that.

What alternative is there?
glxgears has been present on every distro I've tried. I might be wrong (for reasons which are beyond my understanding), but I see no problem with using it as a method to determine the effectiveness of various tweaks on a specific machine. Or am I wrong?

I really don't know the answer. You are probably right about "effectiveness of various tweaks on a specific machine," but the OP started out by saying, "Somebody else's machine runs glxgears faster than mine."

Yeah, I guess that'd get old pretty quickly for a developer.
allright after tested ut2k4, highest resolution, with all maxed details, i was able to play without dropping below 60 fps... so i guess it is well installed
