Gateway M305CRV and no 1024x768

Well, I've been searching for a solution for a while now. I tried posting on this forum about this once before, but now that thread is gone, so I'll try posting again.

I can't get my Gateway M305CRV (which has an intel 82852/855GM integrated card which uses the i810 driver) to display at 1024x768. Windows can, openSuSE10.1 apparently can't.

I've tried telling it to use the vesa driver in xorg.conf, tried removing all other modelines, and tewaked with 855resolution a lot at this point. No matter what I do, I still get 800x600, despite how much I'm telling xorg to go higher. Also, sax2 has this strange habit of crashing whenever I try to change the configuration in init 3, so I've been configuring it in init 5 and then restarting the X server.

current xorg.conf says this:

(yes, I've run 855resolution quite a few times at this point)

Is there something I'm missing, or should I just turn this machine into a picture frame?
