well im trying to get FC4 to run 1024x768, and i added the values to xorg.conf, but it doesnt work, heres my xorg.conf

This is just a guess, but it looks like all you have is a generic video driver loaded. This driver might not support that resolution. Again, just a guess.

no thats not it because i was able to run 1024x768 on slack 10.2

I know that when I installed Slackware, I had to choose 1024x768x256 during the installation. I think it is done during the LILO install, because LILO passes this info to the kernel so it will boot at this resolution. I think it's at /etc/lilo.conf. But that's Slackware and you might not be using LILO anyway.

I'm using Nvidia drivers now, they work great.

Here is my setup with VESA. It looks like it has settings for 8-bit and 16-bit color as well. Perhaps it's there in case 24 and 32-bit don't wan't to work. Something to fall back on maybe? You might want to just try a lower DefaultDepth.
