OK hang in there thyme :^)
I'm using X at the moment 1024 x 768 24 bpp very nice looking but I'm NOT using the accelerated graphics thingy
don't use dripkg! I don't bother (but its possible if you're sure you want to go down that road
see
http://www.lilug.org/pipermail/2003-July/009728.html )
I'm not a mandrake person but I did have RH9.0 running X nice, it just worked strait out of the box with startx command
I changed BIOS Advanced Setup IGD Memory type to UMA=8MB 1st, I always install so it boots non graphical (run level 3)
then go startx and see if the X windows works, if it crashs usually can ctrl-alt-backspce back to command line
then you can edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file, I can email mine if you want to see the red hat one,
anyway just use the vesa driver this is from my XF86Config
Section "Device"
Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
Driver "vesa"
you might be trying to load some weird modules : slackware 9.1 tried to load intelfb and i810_rng until I put them in
/etc/hotplug/blacklist, look in /var/log/messages and Ctrl Alt F1 etc, or just reinstall ?
I suppose your kernel installed OK and everything else is running OK?
Actually I was not happy with X in RH 9.0 - I think it crashed occaisionally pos. because of ACPI
I think I've got the hardware really stable now with 2.4.22 and ACPI
tell me how you go or send some more info...
