Red face Can't install Video Card in Mandrake 9.1 and Acer Travelmate 230

Dear All:
I'm a newcomer of Linux. Pls help me. Thanks a lot.
My OS is Mandrake 9.1(kernel 2.4.21) and my machine is Acer TranveMate 230.
My problem is that I can't start X window.
The following is my step:
1: root@localhost tmp#kernel-source-2.4.21-0.13mdk.i586.rpm;
2: root@localhost tmp#dripkg-1.0-4.i386.rpm (downloaded from Intel Website)
3: root@localhost tmp#XFdrake
and then the system prompt to choose the video card/monitor/resolution , I choose Intel 845/ Flat Panel 1024*768/ 1024*768 24bpp and receive Fail. I then try 640*480 and others, I can't start X too.
What's the problem?

Thanks so much,
Urs,
thyme (From Shanghai, P.R.China)

OK hang in there thyme :^)
I'm using X at the moment 1024 x 768 24 bpp very nice looking but I'm NOT using the accelerated graphics thingy
don't use dripkg! I don't bother (but its possible if you're sure you want to go down that road
see http://www.lilug.org/pipermail/2003-July/009728.html )

I'm not a mandrake person but I did have RH9.0 running X nice, it just worked strait out of the box with startx command
I changed BIOS Advanced Setup IGD Memory type to UMA=8MB 1st, I always install so it boots non graphical (run level 3)
then go startx and see if the X windows works, if it crashs usually can ctrl-alt-backspce back to command line
then you can edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file, I can email mine if you want to see the red hat one,

anyway just use the vesa driver this is from my XF86Config

Section "Device"
Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
Driver "vesa"

you might be trying to load some weird modules : slackware 9.1 tried to load intelfb and i810_rng until I put them in
/etc/hotplug/blacklist, look in /var/log/messages and Ctrl Alt F1 etc, or just reinstall ?

I suppose your kernel installed OK and everything else is running OK?

Actually I was not happy with X in RH 9.0 - I think it crashed occaisionally pos. because of ACPI
I think I've got the hardware really stable now with 2.4.22 and ACPI

tell me how you go or send some more info...

Hi Thyme,

It could be the pcidata library of the dripkg; Please check my post at

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=110333

and let me know.

Talking Yep, I think you're right bege, thanx

I got the 845G drivers to work on the travelmate 230 by makeing the AGP and drm drivers from intel
then copying the extensions library (probably wasn't necessary)
but I didn't change any other lib modules so avoided trouble with libpcidata.a

I probably could have just used the install shell script and then replaced libpcidata
more easily

anyway direct rendering is on i830 loaded, seems to work well with 65536K for video, got MPlayer working too!
