I've just got a new laptop, the Asus K55VM (here's specs Asus K55VM ).
With the
Realtek RTL8168/8111 Gigabit-LAN (10/100/1000MBit), Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter (bgn)
under networking.

I'm going for Backtrack and not other Linux distros because I just started computer science, it has all I need, and I want to work in computer and network security later, so I'm planning on learning a lot of these tools and methods on my own.

And well, the problem is that I can't find any wireless networks with it, even though I know there are some.
Tell me if you need some console output from any commands.

regarding this thread your adapter works out-of-the-box on ubuntu 12.04 so maybe you should try with blackbuntu that is similar to backtrack but based on ubuntu.
