Thanks for the reply but I don't think that is the problem.
I setup in lilo.conf the option to either boot with the original huge kernel from slackware where almost every driver is included, or my new kernel. Both are booting the same partition just different kernels. Everything works when I boot with the original huge kernel.

Im guessing that it has something to do with the video driver. But I am not sure.
I have a Dell inspiron 5150 with nvidia video. FYI I have not install the downloaded nvidia on my system yet. I know it has to be reinstalled with the new kernel so I did not install it at all. I am only using the generic video driver. Once again, startx works just not bootup console.
Any help would be much appreciated.
