Why doesn't HP Scanjet 8300 work on debian Jessie?
No luck with the HP Scanjet 8300 USB scanner on Debian Jessie, even though it is supported by the avision backend. None of the other backends work.
scanimage -L can see it: "device `avision:libusb:002:009' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 8200 flatbed scanner". (It is an 8300.)
sane-find-scanner cannot see it.
lsusb can see it. I get the same results whether I run as root or not, so it isn't a permission issue.
scanimage and xsane both report "Failed to open device 'avision:libusb:002:009': Operation not supported." simplescan reports "Unable to connect to scanner." Tried a variety of USB cables.
Works flawlessly in Windows, but not in a virtualbox.
I suspect something is wrong with my debian install, but I don't know where to start beyond what I have already done.
When your running a HP on Linux you have to install what's called HPLIP.-
Once you have HPLIP installed reboot your pc. Look for the HP Device Manager and set up your printer upon doing so your printer should work.
-::-Debian is very stable so I don't think that there is anything wrong with your install.
If so you would of noticed trouble with Debian before hand.-::-
Followed the instructions here and got it to work. I am guessing that sane-avision is attempting to operate a non-existent document feeder. The scanner is really picky about how it is connected, it has to go through a USB hub. If I plug it directly into the usb port on the machine it won't work.
