I hadn't logged in to mandrake in almost a week. Then, when I did, and I tried to get on line, my modem didn't work. After messing with it a few days, I decided to just reinstall linux, thinking that I would just start from scratch to get it going, and, at the same time, wipe out all the stuff I messed up while trying to fix the problem. Now at least mandrake knows that I do indeed have a modem, but I still can not get on line. I tried to save the error messages to a text editor, so that I could post them. But, they look like a bunch of gibberish in windows. What I do have is the ppp log that opens after the error.

The first one, also said something about setting up ppp in a peer group or something. Whatever that means. I'm assuming that it has something to do with "Serial line is looped back". That just doesn't look good. I also have a wvdial log, if that will help. Please let me know if I left out something needed.
BTW, I want to thank everyone for just being here. I can usually get answers to my questions just by searching the boards. But, this time didn't turn up anything useful.
OK,I'm about to give up. I rebooted to mandrake, to try to get the error message, and post it here. Now I get this:
Quote:
kppp can not find:
/dev/modem
Please make sure you have setup your modem device properly and/or adjust the location of the modem device on the modem tab of the setup dialog.
Run KPPP >setup >queery modem, this will tell you if your modem is set up ok.
If not,you could try changing where it's pointing to,/dev/modem, /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, /dev/ttyS3.
Com 1 is /dev/ttyS0.Normally serial modems use the above dev's.
If it is a winmodem it's probably something like /dev/ttySLTO.
It was pointed to /dev/modem. "file /dev/modem" used to say "symbolic link to "/dev/ttyS4". Now it says "no such file or directory". "/dev/modem" just disappeared on me. Again!

hi im still very much a newb but i had a similar problem, looks to me like mandrake thinks your modem is at /dev/modem, when in fact you have stated in another post its at /dev/tty4. i use kppp , not sure about you but when i set up an internet connection all i have to do is choose where the modem is. i think theres a modem tab in the dialogue setup. hope ive helped in some vague way
Try uvone's suggestion and then run queery modem again after each selection. If you do not get a ok output, your modem has not been found.
You could then try running dmesg: this should tell you some more info about your modems location.
I did, in fact, try that before I even posted here. Under the device tab in kppp, I tried every one of those. Even though I knew none of them would work, since my device isn't listed. I need ttyS4, and it's not listed in kppp. After I reinstalled mandrake, from a terminal, if I do "file /dev/modem" it says "symbolic link to /dev/ttyS4". After I reboot the computer it says "no such file or directory". Now, /dev/modem is gone, if I "file dev/ttyS4" I get "symbolic link to "tts/4". However, I can't point kppp to ttyS4. Is there another dialer that I can use that will let me point in the right direction??

Is your modem a serial one or is it a winmodem?
I have a USR Performance Pro Modem model #5610b. The driver is supposed to be built in mandrake.
BTW, I wanted to post the results of "dmesg", but again, it looks like a bunch of gibberish in windows. But, anyway, for the line that mentioned "ttyS4" it said something along the lines of "ttyS4 is locked". I can't remember exactly, but that 's what I got out of it.
I had a look for your model 5610b at US Robotics and it is a pci internal modem. At the same webpage there are RedHat drivers, which could possiblly work with MDK 9.1.
