USR 56k ext modem in RH9/Gnome - finds wrong modem . . . .

Last month I ran RH7.3 for about a week: it correctly found the modem which is USR/ 3com model 5625 56k fax voice pro. - no problems. Access speed unknown

I've just installed RH9 and do have an internet connection BUT:

wvdial.conf insists that it is a "generic modem". So i ran
wvdialconf //etc/wvdial.conf and the result was a new modem declaration appended to the .conf fiile. The original entry remains at the 'top' of the file.
The modem speed is correctly stated and I still have i-net access.

Problems:
1) I don't know how to force it to recognise that I don't have a generic modem

2) The download speed is about 0.9Kb/sec !!!

Under windows I get typically around 7Kb/sec (ok i know its not hot but its ok like that)

Any helpful suggestions gratefully received.

If u need more info plse ask.

Cool

1. The modem name is not relavant, its only the command chain which needs to be right.
2. Command chain is OK.

3. Used setserial -av /dev/ttyS1 to find the port details.

Port speed was set ABOVE its capability. reset speed to 115200.
set flow control to CRTSCTS on and XonXoff to off.

Wow ! connection speed now up to 5KBps.

Having learnt this on Linux I went to Windows and corrected the port setting there too !

problem solved.
