using external hard drives with different linux distributions

Hello,

I have a couple of questions about the use of external hard drives with Linux.

First of all, is there any specific type of external hard drive I need to get in order for it to be compatible with Linux?

Second, What steps do I need to take to make it operational? (e.g. format the drive, mount the drive, etc.)

Thirdly, will it create a problem if I use the hard drive with different machines running different distributions of Linux? For instance, on my computer I have 2.4.22-1.2199.nptl_52.rhfc1.atsmp (Red Hat Fedora COre)
but n my new lab they run SUSE (not sure what version off the top of my head).

Thank you very much to anyone that can help me with the questions!

Please let me know if any further information is required.

Paul

well you need to tell us what you are using this drive for. if it's just user data then any external USB drive should run just fine. it'll be more complex wrt what you can do with it if you're looknig to install linux directly on it.

data storage and transfer

Thank you for the reply. The external hard drive will only be used for data storage and transfer.

Will the drive be mounted automatically when I plug it in?

Thanks again,

Paul
