USB over-current change killing USB ports

Running Debian (etch) on kernel 2.6.15-1-8...

My PC has 5 USB connections. 4 are in the back of my computer, and one is on the front as part of a multiple card reader (SmartMEdia, CompactFlash, etc.) Recently, I've been getting messages about "over-current change" when booting. Now, my printer and my USB powered speakers don't work (aRta and ALSA say they can't find the sound device, which is /dev/dsp AFAIK). dmesg puts out the following:
Code:

I'm at my wits end. I've been working on this for 3 days and I can't find any useful advice anywhere that's worked. Any suggestions or is it a physical problem that spells the death of my USB ports?

Try recompiling your kernel with DEBUG defined. It should give you more info in your dmesg.

Problem... solved

My worst realization has come to pass. The problem ended up being a power supply problem. The motherboard was shutting down my USB ports to protect what was attached to them. Power could still get through, but no data. So, chalk this one up to physical trouble. Real trouble, as I had to get a whole new processor in the end, with a new power supply and motherboard. Took a while, but at least I'm back in action. EOF

I got the same problem with my Intel mainboard with ATOM cpu, and fixed this trouble setting, in the BIOS menu, USB legacy mode.

So, try to setup USB LEGACY MODE in you BIOS : hope you fix the over-current USB problem.
Best regards. Paolo
