What's killing usb module

I have Mandriva 2006/64 installed on two partitions (hda3 and hda8). hda8 is a back up of hda3, created by copying all the files from hda3, and modifying fstab. The hda8 partition works perfectly.

The hda3 partition has decided not to install the usb module. As a quick fix, I reformated hda3, and copied all the files from hda8. On first boot, the usb module works, BUT on the next boot, the module is not installed!

If I do: lsmod | grep usb
usblp 16512 0
usbcore 121388 1 usblp

What is doing this, and how do I fix it??

usb module

Put the line you use to install the module in your rc.local file.

I would lose my usb modem on every reboot until I did this.

Thank you steved123,

I found that adding three lines to /etc/modprobe.preload "fixed" the problem, but does not explain why I had to create a fix. The lines I added were:

usb-storage
usb-ohci
usb-uhci

I note also, that usbview does not work because it looks at /proc/bus/usb/devices - the devices directory is not there.

I now find although adding the three lines to /etc/modprobe.preload "fixed" the problem for my printer, my other usb devices like scanner and camera are not being found.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to solve this??

Doing some more searching, I have found that on booting, I have /sys/bus/usb/devices and /pro/bus/usb/ (no devices).

usbview cannot find anything because it looks at /proc/bus/usb/devices

If I do:
# mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb

I get /proc/bus/usb/devices; and usbview identifies my scanner, camera, and printer (the printer works ok with or without /proc/bus/usb/devices).

Digikam can identify the camera and add it to it's list, but then if I select the camera it has added to download images, digikam cannot find it!

Obviously the scanner and digikam are looking somewhere else. So what do I do now???

I have found that the cause of this problem is a line in lilo.conf. When I rem out "initrd=/boot/initrd.img", the system boots and all usb functions work as they should. Here is the amended lilo.conf:

default="Mandriva-2006"
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
keytable=/boot/us-intl.klt
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
prompt
nowarn
timeout=100
message=/boot/message

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="Mandriva-2006"
root=/dev/hda3
# initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent"
vga=788

When lilo.conf contains the line "initrd=/boot/initrd.img" the screen has the graphic display, but when the line "initrd=/boot/initrd.img" is rem-ed out, there is only a text display.

Is there a way to restore the graphic display??
