USB drivers for ULTRA ULT33046 (openSuSE 11.0)

I recently purchased the aforementioned model uninterruptible power supply as an easy way to keep the utilities from screwing up my computer with spikes, sags, etc. It said that it supported Linux and I didn't look into it any further. After contacting PowerCom for customer support on this topic it came down to them not knowing how to solve it. For anyone that needs it I can post the outputs that I sent them as well as the email correspondence.

After that I looked into using NUT. This application appears to be the most promising, but I can't get the driver to work correctly. I've followed the directions here, but I installed the software via YaST to keep things consistent. The driver I'm using is usbhid-ups and the device I am using is /dev/hiddev0. I'm pretty sure these are correct. I've also tried these directions, but I ran into the drivers failing to load. Anyway, if anyone has any insight on these topics let me know. I'm not sure what else I can provide so let me know if anything else is needed. Have a Happy New Year!

No ups expert, but those instructions look old. A few common sense checks suggest themselves

1. Who/what is making /dev/hiddev0? If udev doesn't do it automagically, you might not have it. udev can be told to do it - somewhere in /etc/udev
root can do it, but you need major & minor numbers and a type.

2. ownerships and passwords seem important. YaST will probably have installed as root:root. Config files seem important

3. There is usually a debug switch, or a foreground switch so you can catch errors. Use these to gather information, and then we can diagnose. "Drivers don't load" tells me nothing. "Drivers can't find ups" would point you.
Then get the exact phrase and google it.

4. Definitely try the -u root option.
