the drive setup is what i just read off
i remembered i had EZBIOS on an identical motherboard but have since switched boards. this board does not have the EZBIOS installed yet, and therefore, the BIOS does not see the WD drive geometry.
The (unix) fdisk and my BIOS don't agree on how they represent geometries.
fdisk says HDD is :

255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1653 cylinders
cylinders of 16065*512=8225280 bytes
The BIOS 'heads' input range is 1 to 16 and totalizes to ~8000mb with those cylinder and sector settings from fdisk -- which is nowhere near right,
I believe i had better put the WD EZBIOS in to solve the problem with the BIOS not seeing HDD correctly.
I can then worry about the bootloading (as this may fix it altogether anyway
).
