toshiba qosmio

Hi, I have a Toshiba qosmio f10 canadian model. It had to update the bios. These updates are here

http://209.167.114.38/support/download/ln_bymodel.asp

Anyway, I updated this bios like 4 months ago and have foggoten what I have done.

This will sound extremely crazy so be prepared, I somehow managed to get an iso disc image of the bios as this box does not have a floppy, nor do I have an external one. But I have managed to forget how I acquired this during a discussion on the phone with a toshiba service guy.

I still have the image on disc, the thing is that the site does not have it and so I thought maybe I got it from another site, like the US site, but not to what I can see,as they don't even suppport this model, so I thought maybe I went with the model above or below, but then I rememebered that when I used the utility it did for sure say qosmio f10 update when booted.

Ok so maybe I used the non-windows app to get the files and write them to a disc, but none of the files are easily accessiable this way

I will have the disc again in like 10 mins so I will examine it more closely then.

Anyway, when I boot to windows and try to use the windows update bios it says it is already updated. Which is good so it reafirms my cd image.

Which brings me to my question, when you use this disc it has two options:
-update qosmio f10 bios
-update ebk/svp or something like that I will check when I get the disc.

My question to the tech, who has worked on toshiba's boxes for 10 years, was what was this other option. When you select it it tells you what version you have and what version is on the disc. And then you update it, but I not sure it takes hold.

I have different problems with my cd drive so I thought maybe this was a firmware update for it? When I search svp and toshiba (google) it says something about the display.

I know it did something cause when I trashed the windows install with cfdisk I tried to reload the crappy restore disc image. It would not work so I had to fix the dmi string from a utility chgdmi.exe which I had to install some windows os to run it. So I choose win98 cause it installed fast on this machine. It prompted me to type the model of machine in as follows, Qosmio F10 and rebooted and the restore worked.

I have the bios cd now so I will try it and post back. It says it has two megs used in windows and will not see it and don't have any lin here right now.

Also what does this dmi string do? Will post back in a min.

Ok, when I ran it said;

Microsoft Windows Startup Menu

1.EC/KBC & SVP update Qosmio F10
2.Bios update Qosmio F10
3.Exit without any updates

So I select 1.

I now is updating something.Disc is accessed.

It says:
CHGFIRM.exe v2.30

SVP Param File v.E82001E Firmware File:ec82noob
SVP ver.2.10 Firm ver. 2.20
a
What is this? I asked the tech and he knew nothing about it and was quite insulted by the question saying that this disc is false, yadda yadda ya... and that I am dumb for trying to do this myself and that LINUX IS NOT A SUPPORTED OS AND SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO RUN PROPERLY WITH THIS SYSTEM.

He also said he has never heard of firmware updates for toshiba's, only compaq and such, ugh ,right!

I although I never asked him for help with this directly, I kust mentioned the
problems I had were in both OS's.

I also asked him if I could turn off the acpi in the bios as it does not even respond well under windows.

I have not yet compiled a kernel for this box for toshiba support.

What is the ec/kbc & svp?

I a terribly sorry for such a long and windows mentioning post, but I have to ask.

Hi, I want to intsall 1.20 on my Qosmio F10, and i cannot do the update, in windows on .exe tells me that: the user is not authorized to update bios and on .iso booted from CD, tell me that: The New BIOS file is not for this machine

So, do you still have that CD with BIOS?
