Is the port replicator being recognized correctly? Is some form of USB serial device being created (i.e. /dev/ttyUSB0)?

If you really have a type 5 keyboard then you can not plug it directly into the replicator. The output of the keyboard is TTL which requires a level shifter to work with RS-232 levels.
