Sound stopped working on Mint 13, 64-bit w/Mate
I recently installed Mint 13 and everything was working great until I did an update through the update manager. Now my sound does not work in both my speakers and headphones. I removed pulseaudio and rebooted with no effect, so I've re-installed pulseaudio. I am at a loss when it comes to sound issues. Any help would be appreciated.
Here is my information

As a first step, I suggest booting to a Live CD of something and testing the sound to rule out the possibility of hardware failure.
It's extremely unlikely to be a hardware issue, but this test takes only a few minutes, and, if your sound card has gone west, no amount of tinkering with software will fix it.

I installed pulse volume control and the speakers started to work. I am still having an issue with the headphones though. When I plug them in the speakers stop producing sound, as they should, but the headphones do not play sound. Pulse audio and amixer both recognize the headphones and Pulse Volume Control shows that it is receiving a signal. I suspect the problem to be in the configuration of my hardware. The headphone jack is plugged into the top (green) 3.5mm jack on my tower. There is an additional (green) 3.5 mm jack in the back which I have the speakers hooked up too. This setup has always given me sound issues on new installs. Usually it is trivial, like both speakers and headphones work at the same time. I can work with that, but no audio is a deal breaker.
Edit: Everything works as advertised in the live environment.

Open the case and doublecheck the wiring to the front jack. I had one work loose once. It's worth a shot, if only to rule out one potential cause.
I have learned that it's wise to rule out hardware as a possible cause when it's easy to do so quickly.

Well it looks like downloading pulse volume control solved the problem. The issue with the headphones turned out to be the headphones. I was unaware of a 3.5mm jack that also attached to the ear piece to protect the cord. The jack came loose a tiny bit. I noticed the issue when I plugged into my netbook which runs a 32 bit version of mint 13 mate. The sound worked but was tinny. I had not updated anything to cause any malfunctions. I inspected the headphones and found the problem. Thanks for the help frankbell.

Glad it's figured out. Nice detective work.
