Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with Mate desktop - No sound, cannot get to Multimedia Settings

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with Mate desktop, and I had sound with the motherboard
that used to be working with the default settings, speakers attached to analog output jack on motherboard.

Then, at some point the sound vanished. I can set the Volume Control level, Mute - Un-mute, but there is never any sound coming from speakers attached to the analog audio output.

I have another bootable Windows 7 64-bit drive on the same machine, and the sound is working fine in Windows 7. Not a hardware problem.

I was thinking maybe some settings have changed, and I was trying to go to
Multimedia->Pulse Audio Volume Control
Configuration tab, and I want to verify that "Analog Stereo Output" is set up.

Here comes the problem: I cannot get to the Multimedia settings in Mate desktop, because there is no shortcut for it in the menus in Mate. Or maybe it just vanished from my menus?

Is there an alternate way of getting to Multimedia settings in Ubuntu 12.04?
Or putting it to the menus?
(Perhaps getting to Multimedia Settings from Terminal)

What else could be wrong? Do you think that it is a good plan, to fix the sound?

The mixer app should be called gnome-volume-control. You should be able to start it from the terminal or kicker (alt-f2 or win key) And you can probably add it to the gnome panel by right-clicking.

If that doesn't work, try fixing it with alsamixer. Just open a terminal and type "alsamixer". It's rather self-explanatory. Just choose the right soundcard and turn all the things up.

I am seeing a similar problem on my W520 and tried all the obvious things. I put the volume control on my toolbar and it is unmuted and all the way up. I installed aumix and alsamixer and turned off mute on all sliders and ran them up to what should be a reasonable level. I tried all the different sound 'cards' that showed up. I have Amarok running a playlist while I try things, so I would expect to hear something if I stumbled over the magic. So far, nada.

Solved for Ubuntu 12.04, MATE 1.6

Was searching for a solution to having no sound (Ubuntu 12.04, MATE 1.6) and this thread came very high on Google.

I tried turning up every volume in both the MATE Volume Control (GUI) and in alsamixer (terminal) but that had no effect.

I ran gnome-sound-applet which added an icon next to the indicator icons for wifi and battery. Clicking on that showed a volume setting which was at zero. Increasing that volume gave me my sound back.

In my case it took more than that. I had to add my user to the audio group before I even saw the sound cards appear in the applet.
