sound recordings crackle

I'm trying to record sound on linux. My distro is Suse 10, running on a Dell inspiron 6000. I'm using Sound Recorder in Gnome.

When i play back what I record, it obviously corresponds to what is inputted as I hear a loud crackle when a loud sound should be playing, but thats not much use is it?

I've tried setting the mic volume high, enabled mic boost. Volume control says i have 2 audio devices:

SigmaTel STAC9752,53
Intel ICH6

tried them both with the same result.

really i must say linux still has a long way to go - i'm not one to complain but i have had to tweak with almost every piece of hardware on my machine just so it has work as well as on windows. nevertheless i'll keep trying so any ideas would be a help.

i'm not an audio expert either, but actually you probably need to turn your settings DOWN in stead of up.

make sure your pcm and gain are lowered too.

play something while you adjust things.

i doubt linux will ever 'advance' to the point of making these decisions, like ms has, for us..

i tried turning the sound levels down but i just get quiter crackling. perhaps i should have mentioned, the crackling is not the kind you get when the gain is turned up on a studio microphone, rather it's bursts of indecipherable static where there should be speech or music.
