Sound Input Problem

Hi,

I have decided it is finally time to tackle the last remaining problem (that I know of) with my Kubuntu 7.10 setup - Audio Input.

My audio output works just fine, but I cannot get any audio input, from neither the built-in mic or the mic in my headset.

I have absolutely know idea what kind of microphones they are, or if that even matters.

I know none of that is much help, but tell me what command outputs I need to do for you and I'll do em.

do you have the root password?

run a mixer and check that the inputs are not muted or volumes low
kmix is easy....dark green against input . mic means muted
then slide volume up to about 70 %

tab for switches is slightly harder....you tell kmix where the jacks are.

or try alsamixer.

but once you find the cuprit you need to have a file called /etc/asound.state edit with root powers....if on reboot your last settings were not saved.

my mute for mic is about number 87 so use control/f for find and search for mute? or scroll

I opened up Kmix and to my dismay found my mic was muted. So now I do have input. I feel ashamed.

But this raised a new problem. even with everything in Kmix turned all the way up, anything I say is inputted as whisper-quiet (I yelled directly into the microphone and got nowhere near ordinary conversation volume).

So, from one problem and on to the next. Any suggestions?

I refer you to that jack section.....

can you try connecting external speakers with volumes all the way up and speaker vol all the way up?

then look at that jack section...I think it mutes the volume if you select headset output to protect you.

keep it as speaker but plug in the head set and see if it makes a diff

I am unable to find anything like a 'headphone amp setting' or anything that looks like it might be that in Kmix. Google revealed nothing too.

you may have to go back into kde control center > sound > hardware and set your midi device and of course I have alsa set

then you may get kmix like this?

In the settings area you describe I only have one option.

Select the Midi Device: Midi through Midi Through Port-0 - ALSA Device

And my kmix looks totally different to that!

--UPDATE--

On a whim I downloaded another sound mixer bu the name of QAMix. After turning up the microphone volume on that, all my mics works fine. I guess it might just have been an error in Kmix or something.

At any rate, my problem is solved. Thanks very much aus9.
