I am using Ubuntu 9.10

My sound works fine unless I have headphones plugged in. I've tried 2 sets of headphones, and it doesn't work with either set, so it's not the headphones. The volume is not muted (it's at 100%) for the headphones either in alsamixer. How can I diagnose and fix this?

Is it alsa or alsa through pulseaudio ?

When I had issues with my headphones, I installed padevchooser which gave me a utility to assign sound output to a device. Without that I couldn't see whether the headphones were an option.

I had to check the headphones as the device to use for output.
This is on Fedora though, but it sounds like a similar issue.

To ask the obvious question, are you sure the physical socket you're plugging the headphones into is okay? Those things generally aren't terribly rugged, and if there's a connection broken there, you could get audio from the speakers but not from the headphones (though obviously it depends on exactly how the connection broke). When the headphones are plugged in, can you move the headphones plug around a lot? Does it feel mechanically broken?

I am using pulseaudio. I have tried selecting different output device, but that didn't work either. Any further ideas about what to do?

And yes, I'm sure the physical socket and the headphones are OK, they both worked fine when I had Windows when I first bought the laptop. I had this problem with Gentoo as well, and could never get it worked out. It seems to be a Linux issue.

i have had a issue kinda like yours with pulseadio and using the intel HD driver. i ended up using alsa>pulse adio plugin which sorta fixed things. never have been able to get the volume to go very high. but all the jacks work though on integrated audio ( mine is MCP61) which also uses the intelHD driver

EDIT: so i guess i am saying it sounds like a driver issue. however, if you get sound from speakers and not headphones and ytour using the same jack? you said laptop right? my nv5927u has a setup like that with the optical in the same jack slot. you might have already done this but does your card have multiple modes out? 5.1/7.1/etc? you probably know more than me but i am just trying to help out.

allend -- I tried editing /etc/modprobe.conf/alsa-base.conf as your link suggested, but it didn't fix the problem. Any other suggestions?


mrmnemo -- You said you used the "alsa>pulse audio plugin" How did you configure this so that it worked?

well to be honest i just pulled it from fedora updates and installed with yum. outside of going to the sound settings and picking the card ( in my case it showed as internal ) and then playing with its out put settings ( had a drop down list.) until it worked. however, i did run alsamixer>picked the card>adjusted the volume of each channel.
sorry i dont have more details for you. i also noticed that i have only 1 jack on my laptop. whereas it seems you have a front mounted on. er...i guess i should have kept my mouth shut. all i know is that once the plugin was installed ( i didnt edit any confs for it ) things worked.
