It could be something as simple as your CD drive sound cable not connected to your sound card or mobo sound chip ....
Or is this problem only with Mepis?

There is also the possibility that you need an analog cable from your CD or DVD player to your sound card. IMO, Windows handles digital sound from an optical device better than Linux.

No - kscd works fine in Mepis, just not for GNewbie. Maybe he's fixed it, or maybe he's given up with Mepis ...

Right. I was having similar problems w/ KsCD, saw solutuion on another thread: click on 'Use direct digital playback' under 'Configure KsCD' (to correct for no analog cable)

sorry for being out of touch for so long.
no, i didn't give up on mepis... but i think i have some insight into my problem, although it isn't solved...
my sound starts of fine with the mepis start up music.
then it abruptly stops - someone mentioned it may be a process interfering with the sound. after this interrupt, sound doesn't work in way shape or form - from hard drive to cd player.
this is the output to cat /proc/interrupts
