slow recognition of keyboard and mouse using KVM

I have a Belkins KVM switch connecting Fedora 12 and Snow Leopard. When I switch to Leopard the keyboard and the mouse respond immediately while in the other direction I have to wait until I should be able to use those device. However, the screen respond immediately in both cases.

The slow response has been a headache and I have been searching a community for a while and but could not find an answer.

Depending on the exact USB KVM model and its firmware, I think it's most likely the fact that the keyboard and mouse, connected via USB, are "re-initialized" each time the Belkin KVM switches between computers. This is in contrast to a USB-based KVM that "keeps alive" the mouse and keyboard devices on each connected computer, even when the KVM is switched between computers.

This happened with some of the older IOGear USB-based KVM's and some 2.6.x kernels, too, but I don't remember the specifics on that.

I'd recommend checking with Belkin to see if there might be any firmware update(s) available for your particular KVM switch. If none exists, and you're running a recent distro with current updates, you might just be out of luck.

Hope this helps.
