ok first this is not a suggestion for the site ..
next time pick the most appropriate fourm, in
this case i would say "Linux - Hardware"

but other than that, tell us what is happening
when you are trying these distros ..

sis530

I have an old Compaq 5441 which uses the sis530 video card. I am running Mandrake 9.0 on it, I had to dink with it since autoselect does not want to work well on the HP D1194A monitor, but it does work.

For the monitor, it is shown by drake as Hsync 31.5-37.9 and Vsync 50-70.

I am also trying to get this combo to work with KanotixLIve CD, thus found this posting.

I am not clear if this video card is VGA or SVGA, will be looking on google further.

More info

In Kanotix, I can't even get a good screen in runlevel 2, which is supposed to be achieved by putting 2 at the end of boot options.

I found a URL http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsisvga.shtml which supplies sis drivers for linux. My problem is, while I get bootoptions screen in some sort of simple mode, possibly vga I am not sure, I can't seem to enter runlevel 2, command prompt mode, if I did, I could install sis drivers. Will keep you posted.

Knoppix

I just tried Knoppix 3.4 on the same Compaq computer. I got a message which says if failed to load module sis, though boot-up messages indicated it loaded driver (sis). I do not know which is correct.

However, the video worked (mouse did not load) with following boot options:

knoppix 2 lang=en vga=normal vsync=72 hsync=37.9

The sync is for my HP D1194A monitor.

My point is I was able to make a sis530 video card work at some level with Knoppix 3.4 by setting vga=normal and supplying vxync and hsync for the monitor.

I will try better video combos and post here if it is possible.
