SDcard problems on HP dv2640

I have almost everything working nicely on my new laptop running gentoo.
However there is some trouble with the built in SD/MMC reader.
it is listed as follows by lspci:

01:09.1 SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 22)
01:09.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C843 MMC Host Controller (rev 12)
01:09.3 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter (rev 12)
01:09.4 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd xD-Picture Card Controller (rev 12)

after a reboot an sd card mounts and unmounts perfectly and works well
here is what shows up in /var/log/messages:

Nov 15 15:46:42 thetraveler mmc0: new SD card at address d848
Nov 15 15:46:42 thetraveler mmcblk0: mmc0:d848 SD02G 1985024KiB
Nov 15 15:46:42 thetraveler mmcblk0: p1
Nov 15 15:46:45 thetraveler hald: mounted /dev/mmcblk0p1 on behalf of uid 1000
Nov 15 15:46:54 thetraveler mmc0: card d848 removed
Nov 15 15:46:54 thetraveler hald[4799]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/mmcblk0p1 as enclosing drive was disconnected
Nov 15 15:46:54 thetraveler hald: unmounted /dev/mmcblk0p1 from '/media/disk-1' on behalf of uid 0

after working once it never works again until a reboot(i tried reloading drivers and restarting hald to no effect). It shows up in messages still as being added and removed but hald doesn't recreate the device or mount it. Other removable storage, usb/ieee1394 drives, still automount/unmount just fine as always.

any ideas?
thanks in advance
