Ah, the lovely ESS1938. I had one of those... ah... way back when I used Windows 95 on a pentium 120Mhz back in 1996 I believe.
And as I recall.. worked beautifully with linux. First try, no prob, even though back then you had to type snd-config and randomly pick cards that might work
Well. Go to the alsa-project.org homepage, get the drivers, and follow the instructions. not sure what else you expected to hear.
