Hi,

Have been running the new Mandrake 9.1 for the past few days with great success. Everything seems to be working okay - apart from one thing - my ESS Technology|ES1978 Maestro 2E sound card. What's strange is that this card worked fine under Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1 RC1. Running draksound the message I get seems to relate to the aumix and not having permissions to run?

When I run sndconfig I get the following:

This is on a DELL latitude CPx, H500 with 256MB RAM.

Have been investigating this further and read about using lspci -v to show properties of devices. It shows the following:

The point that interests me is that it says "Capabilities: <available only to root>"? Should it not be available to all users? But then it also says that about the video controller and I get screen output okay. Do I need to make it available to all users or is this way off-track?

Another point is that when I run the KDE sound system and change any setting it always says that "device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such file or dir)" and of course when I look there is indeed no such file or dir, so I guess I need to create one. But how?

Looking around the net people talk about editing the modules.conf file, and adding alsa stuff in. Depsite reading all the various configurations posted am bit confused about how to set up the one for the sound card I have.

Any help woiuld be very greatly appreciated.

All sorted - it seems I'd neglected to select to install the alsa stuff. Once i'd done that, just had to run the AlsaMixerGUI to set the spealer to on and all works well now.

i'm having the exact same problem with mandrake 9.1 and i have an es1968 maestro2 inside a dell inspiron 7000.

unfortunatley your solution to the problem is somewhat vague.

i've got all the alsa stuff installed i can find right now. the install i did didn't have the alsa mixer GUI installed so i grabbed that. i turned the speaker on and upped all the volumes... no sound... so i reboot and there's still no sound. i can see where it's booting where it tries to start the alsa mixer and says that it's already running. anyways, when i get back into mandrake i look at the alsa mixer GUI again and the settings are back to the way they were when i first opened the program.

any extra details you can give on what you did to fix this would be greatly appreciated, or if anyone else can tell me what i'm not doing, please do

now i got a solution

changed my modules.conf

here's my new modules.conf

ignore the comments .... seems alsa changed some names and was using some bad and/or potentially missing info

make the necessary changes and do a

/etc/rc.d/init.d/alsa restart

and make the necessary changes to the mixer and you're good to go

I don´t suppose it could be a simple question of wrong IRQ.setting?? I have problems myself with an ESS maestro on a Dell Latitude c600 running Knoppix 3.9 with Linux2.6.11 kernel. I will check later today.

There are some hardware install problems with Linux as compared to Windows XP. Anyway there is just my printer, the soudcard and my external CD left. Hope software will be quicker.

Happy with Linux anyway...
