Question about installing modem drivers
I installed Mandrake 10.1 Community last week, and since then I've been trying to get the modem working. I've read all the problems everyone's had with them and done the scanmodem stuff on linmodems.com. Anyway it turns out Intel still support my modem, so I downloaded the driver off their site. It says it supports kernel 2.4.x and 2.6.x but then I came to install it. Oh, its just an Intel v.90 internal PCI.
The readme file contains the following instructions:
Prerequisites:
1. root access
2. bash shell to run install scripts
3. an Intel536ep modem
4. KERNEL SOURCE HEADERS FOR THE KERNEL YOU ARE RUNNING.
(found on your distribution's CD)
6 steps to install
1. login as ROOT
2. extract the archive into a directory with "tar -zxvf <archivename>.tgz"
3. cd into the directory it created.
4. Type: make clean
5. Type: make 536
6. Type: make install
This will create a /dev/modem device file. This file is used as an interface to
modem by all applications: minicom, kpppd, efax, etc. Please configure the applications
to use /dev/modem if neccessary.
I got so far as step 6, and it says that I havn't got the kernel source headers. Okay, looks like they're on the CD then. But how do I go about installing them? Any response appreciated. Thanks.
