In Mandrake 9.1 it's under /etc/rc.d/init.d/apmd

Actually that would be the really stupid thing I did. When I went to install apmd I hadn't checked to see if it was already installed (turns out it was).

also here's what I got when I typed in those 2 commands:

[Blah Blah Blah]$ rpm --verify apmd
.M...... c /etc/rc.d/init.d/apmd
.M...... /usr/bin/apm
.M...... /usr/bin/apmsleep
.M...... /usr/sbin/apmd
[Blah Blah Blah]$ rpm -qf apmd
error: file apmd: No such file or directory
[Blah Blah Blah]$

Sorry about this one, I meant to say "rpm -ql apmd"

But yeah, looks like your install was definitely corrupted.

rpm -e apmd

Sorry, I must have been really tired when I tried the commands last night. So today I did the correct one and this is what I got.

[Blah Blah Blah]$ rpm -ql apmd
/etc/rc.d/init.d/apmd
/usr/bin/apm
/usr/bin/apmsleep
/usr/bin/on_ac_power
/usr/bin/xapm
/usr/sbin/apmd
/usr/share/doc/apmd-3.1.0
/usr/share/doc/apmd-3.1.0/ANNOUNCE
/usr/share/doc/apmd-3.1.0/BUGS.apmsleep
/usr/share/doc/apmd-3.1.0/ChangeLog
/usr/share/doc/apmd-3.1.0/LSM
/usr/share/doc/apmd-3.1.0/README
/usr/share/doc/apmd-3.1.0/README.transfer
/usr/share/man/man1/apm.1.bz2
/usr/share/man/man1/apmsleep.1.bz2
/usr/share/man/man8/apmd.8.bz2
[Blah Blah Blah]$

So it seems it is installed, and to me everything looks okay.

So does your computer suspend/standby and if so does it actually wake up again?

No, it does nothing. It just sits there mocking my attempts at getting it to understand that, yes, I do in fact have everything installed that it needs. Clearly my computer and I aren't seeing eye to eye on this.

Well, look on the bright side: You have some useful experience with your computer. Maybe your hardware doesn't support that feature after all, or your software doesn't support your hardware.

Is apm enabled in your bios?

Yes, you're right. I mean one of the reasons I installed Linux was to challenge myself and learn more. So at this point I think I may put off trying to get this feature to work. There are so many other great things about Linux that I can focus on.

By the way, I don't know if this matters but I stiil have windows installed and sleep/standby works on there.

Re: if apm is enabled in my bios. I checked and strangely enough I couldn't find the option for it.

So, thank you again for all the help but I don't think it's going to happen.

You could try using "hdparm" to spin down your hard drives.

man hdparm

There are some apm related howto's at the Linux Documentation Project:

The easiest way to open a console as root is to click K->Terminals->Konsole (Super User Mode) (assuming you're using KDE). You will be prompted for the user password, after which you will be logged in as root.

In future, it would be better to start your own thread, with a title say, of 'How do I become Super User?', rather than jumping in on a thread like this. When this thread appears on the Hardware front page, people would think the new post had something to do with APM, and might not respond; whereas they might respond if it's a new topic with zero replies. Basically, you have a better chance of getting an answer if you post your questions in their own thread.
