problem with a nec 1300A dvd burner

I have just bought a nec 1300A dvd burner and the drive doesn't work under my linux distribution (a gentoo). During the kernel boot sequence the drive is well recognized (its name appears on the screen) but I can't mount it. When I use "dmesg" I can read the following error message : "drive appears confused". Do you know if I need a special driver? I tried to find something on the net but I am afraid I am the only one to complain about that... please help me!

Many thanks!
