DVD-R burning in SuSE 9.1 with NEC-1300A

I get the following error message when trying to burn a DVD-R.

*******************************

System

K3b Version: 0.11.7
KDE Version: 3.2.1
QT Version: 3.3.1

*************************************

Suse 9.1 comes with version 5.17 of growisofs installed. I upgraded my dvd-rw tools, so I'm now using v5.19, but it made no difference. The odd thing is that I can only select Auto, 1x or 2x for burning speed, whereas the drive (and the media I'm using) supports 4x. I could burn DVD-Rs before I upgraded from Suse 9.0.

Any ideas?
